Princess Cut

One of most popular diamonds cuts, the princess cut is said to bring out more the “flame” and shine of the diamond. This cut is popular and praised among the professional diamond cutters, since they can make the best of the original properties of the crystal with minimum wastage, by cutting the original diamond in the shape of a pyramid with mirror (double pyramid).

The princess cut is a mixed cut, and one of the most successful of the kind. First invented in 1960 in London by A. Nagy, it was first destined for flat stones on the rough (macle), but became quite popular for diamonds altogether. Some gemological workshops, such as the American Gem Society (AGS), have developed different standards of classifications for the Princess cut, similar in severity as the standards applied on brilliants.

The reason of this cut’s popularity is its intense flame and shine, when compared to other mixed cuts. Yet the most important is that from all the types of diamond cut, this has the least wastage. Furthermore, due to this minimum wastage, a princess cut diamond with the same characteristics as a brilliant cut will also have a slightly lower price.
