Faux Bijoux (Costume jewelry)

They are usually referred to by using the French term faux-bijoux, literally meaning fake jewels. Their creation is based not on precious metals or stones, but on materials considered “cheap”, such as bronze, zamak or alpaca, while the stones are usually made of colored glass, strass, or acrylic. In most of the cases, the metal is gold or silver plated.

Earrings

Earrings are the jewel of the ear, scholarikion in the Byzantine world, and enotion in Ancient Greece, a word deriving from en (in) and oti (ear). In Byzantium, there was an elite battalion of Armenian descent, called the scholars, guarding the emperor’s palace. One of the parts of their outfit was an impressive pair of earrings, called scholarikion enotion, the earring of the scholars.

Jewelry and Greek tradition

Traditional costume jewelry

“The jewels of Greek costumes, expressing directly the level of aesthetics, economics and social conditions of their place of provenance, blend harmonically with the type of costume and become inextricable decorative elements of it…”

Jewelry has always been an essential part of traditional clothing, especially concerning women’s costumes. Gold, silver, and often the admixture of silver with copper were the most popular materials, which combined with the artistic sense of the creators, gave birth to proper works of art.

Lucky charms and their history

We have built thousands of temples to honor luck yet none to honor logic…

Inviting luck has always been wishful thinking thorough the centuries. At all times, men have used and still use a multitude of ways in order to propitiate luck and invite it on their side.

Many try to win luck’s favors through the use of charms, a very ancient habit. The first form of these holy objects was the talisman, with representations of nature and effigies of the ones wearing them.

Cufflinks

The forgotten element of masculine elegance

The ancestral tradition concerning cufflinks was based on the father offering them as a symbolic gift to his son, or a president of a country to his ambassadors or other valuable coworkers.

The elements and symbols adorning cufflinks are often very personal and original. A pair of cufflinks with a monogram of a family symbol, a date of birth or of graduation for instance, is every successful man’s dream.

Chevalier

Cheval in French means horse.

Chevalier is the title of the riding nobles who stood out for their bravery and courage, as well as the name of the ring they wore, also known as signet ring.

This specific ring was destined only for men carrying a title, as it was not permitted for any citizen to wear one.

Wedding Rings

Made of gold or sometimes platinum, this ring renders official the engagement or wedding of a couple. The wedding ring is part of a very ancient tradition and remains until today a proof of dedication of one to another, while the circular shape symbolizes infinite and eternal love.

The habit of wearing the wedding ring on the fourth finger derives from the ancient Romans, who believed that this was the finger where the vein connected to the heart could be found. The name of the ring owner’s significant other is usually engraved in the interior of the ring, next to date of the ceremony.

The champion’s ring

The Super Bowl ring is the highest award of the National Football League, received by the members of the winning team of the league’s championship game, the famous Super Bowl.

Usually made of white or yellow gold and diamonds, the ring is carved with the date of the final, the name and logo of the winning team. The National Football Ring finances 150 rings for each winning team. Depending on the fluctuating prices of gold and diamonds on the market, the cost of each ring can rise up to 5000 dollars.
