Faux Bijoux (Costume jewelry)

They are usually referred to by using the French term faux-bijoux, literally meaning fake jewels. Their creation is based not on precious metals or stones, but on materials considered “cheap”, such as bronze, zamak or alpaca, while the stones are usually made of colored glass, strass, or acrylic. In most of the cases, the metal is gold or silver plated.

In faux bijoux, the artist has a much greater facility in creating and using materials, without having to face the obstacle of expensive costs of precious materials. During the last decades, many interesting series of faux bijoux have coming from famous creators, and signed by great fashion houses, have encountered a great success. These pieces, although of small value considering their nature, have become the subject of great negotiations among collectors.

Nowadays, the combination of materials does not have to be as refined and absolute as it used to be. Some artists experiment with original and unique combinations, such as acrylic with diamonds, or steel with precious stones. The result has very interesting aesthetic aspect, hence the expressions “imitation jewelry “and “junk jewelry”, used for that type or ornaments.

In quite a few occasions, faux bijoux can cost more than the real jewelry, even if made of non precious materials. This is the reason why one should be definitely sure about buying them.
