The British prime Minister has recently stated that the Kohinoor Diamond, which has been adorning the royal crown for centuries, will not be returned to India. The provenance of the diamond is unclear, and has been source of quite a few stories and beliefs, but his importance was mostly based on the fact that it has been one of the biggest diamonds in the world for many years. According to one of the legends, the stone carries a curse which stops only when being in a woman’s possession.
Each and every king who has had the diamond in his possession was aware of the curse, and therefore would always offer it to his wife. It was placed on the royal crown of England in 1877, during the reign of the Queen Victoria. India has since then repeatedly asked for the return of the precious 195 carat diamond. It seems that the request has been renewed, officially or unofficially, since during the recent visit of David Cameron to New Delhi, it has been declared once again that the diamond will not be returned. |
