Famous Pearls

Of the most famous pearls in the world are the ones fished by the Spanish conquistadores on the northern coast of Venezuela, on the islands Cubagua and Margarita.

Set as a pendant to a necklace, the “La Peregrina” pearl was offered to the Queen of Spain. The same pearl became once again the center of attention when the actor Richard Burton purchased it to offer it to his wife Elizabeth Taylor. When Taylor received the La Peregrina, she ordered a new necklace by the Cartier house, as shown on the picture. She usually wore the necklace teamed with the pair of earrings visible on the picture, a Bulgari house creation.

Another necklace boasting one of these famous pearls, the “Margarita”, was offered to Jacqueline Kennedy by the President of Venezuela, when on official visit of the country with her husband John F. Kennedy.

The greatest natural pearl ever discovered is known as the ”Allah Pearl”. It was named after the anonymous Philippine diver, who was a Muslim, and who discovered the pearl on the coast of the Palauan Island in 1934.

This pearl weight was 6,4 kilos, and developed in a mollusc of the “Tridacna Gigas” type, the only species capable of reaching such a large size. This pearl is also referred to as the “Pearl of Lao-Tze”.
