| Iolite |
The name iolite derives from the Greek word Io which means violet. The iolite has a distinct blue color, similar to a blue sapphire. It is quite resistant with a hardness of 7, 7,5 on the Mohs scale and boasts a very distinctive characteristic referred to as pleochroism. By looking at the stone through different angles, one can see totally different shades and colors. When observed from one side, the stone can show a deep blue violet color, while when looked at from the opposite side, it can appear almost colorless. This specific property turns it into a very difficult stone to cut. It has to be cut by an experienced technician who will be able to bring out the best color of the stone when it is looked upon. The iolite was considered the precious stone of Vikings. There is a very interesting explanation for this fact, which is not unrelated to the pleochroism of the stone. It is believed that the Vikings were using this precious stone to help them steer through open seas, when far away from the coastline. By examining the stone from a specific angle, the Vikings could establish the position of the sun and never get lost in their wanderings. When of certain coloring, the iolite can appear very similar to Tanzanite. It is much more resistant than tanzanite, but its price is much lower. When buying iolite, you must be certain that the stone is clear when examined with naked eye and does not have visible inclusions, while boasting a unique color. This precious stone appears of different colors when seen from different angles. Many myths and legends surround the iolite. It is believed to be the stone of happiness and joy. It also believed to hold Feng Shui properties, in enhancing the creation of ideal relationships with other persons. For persons who believe in the specific powers of stones, this precious stone is supposed to cure from sore throat, vein problems and different kinds of skin rashes. Its main areas of extraction are India, Sri Lanka, Mozambique and Brazil. Currently this precious stone is available in great quantities, which guarantees a good, affordable price. Nevertheless, considering that bigger stones of good quality are witnessing a price raise, it would be wise for whoever is considered such a purchase to do so now. {gallery}material_iolite{/gallery} |
